What's Gestalt Therapy?

Gestalt therapy is an existential/experiential form of psychotherapy that emphasizes:

  • here-and-now awareness
  • profound respect
  • our whole experience: thoughts, feelings, behaviors, sensations
  • creative experiment and discovery
  • relationship

A German word, "Gestalt" suggests an integrated view, a holistic perspective.  We respond and react as an entire person, in complex circumstances, and neither person nor place can be understood in pieces or parts. Thus, the mind, body, and spirit, as well as one's setting, are all taken into consideration.

We are naturally whole and full of possibilities. We adapt to adversity, sometimes cutting off possibility, as a way to cope and survive. In a supportive therapeutic relationship, we can grow and learn to understand how to choose and create coping styles and responses that expand our possibilities and enhance our ability, not just to survive, but to thrive.
